Zielgruppe dieses landwirtschaftlichen Projekts sind 100 Frauen aus Ntoroko im Westen Ugandas. Sie sind Mango-Bäuerinnen und lernen, diese
Früchte nicht nur frisch auf dem Markt zu verkaufen, sondern das Obst zu verarbeiten.
Mangos reifen in dieser Region zweimal im Jahr, so daß zur jeweiligen Erntezeit Massen von Mangos reifen, aber nicht verkauft werden können, weil zu viele auf dem Markt sind. Die Preise verfallen, weshalb viele Früchte am und unter Bäumen verderben, weil sich das Pflücken nicht mehr lohnt. Die Frauen bleiben bei dieser Art der Vermarktung arm.
So entstand die Idee, die Mangos zu verarbeiten: zu Mango-Saft, Mango Pickles, getrocknete Mango-Snacks und zu Baby-Nahrung. Diese Produkte können das ganze Jahr über verkauft werden, nicht nur zur Erntezeit. Ihr Einkommen steigt um 50 Prozent, die Armut soll sogar um 70 Prozent sinken und beinahe 100 Prozent der Mangoernte wird verwertet.
The one year project „Mango processing for women empowerment“ in Karugutu, western Uganda is aimed to help women mango growers fight and reduce poverty through processing and adding value to mango. The women will be trained to produce mango Juice, dry mango snacks, mango pickles and mango baby food for selling in local shops, local markets and supermarkets.
Women from the project area continue to be very poor given the low mango prices and poor crop yields of other crops due to climate change. Mango processing does not exist in Uganda and it is unheard of in the project zone. Most of the massive quantities of mangoes produced by women farmers in the project zone is not consumed locally or processed and substantial amounts just rot under the trees or are left to rot on trees for wild animals and birds to feed on, especially because of the lack of market and the high perishability.
The project will directly benefit 100 women and more than 300 women from the community as the project indirect beneficiaries. The processed mango that the women will be trained to produce will reduce mango losses experienced by mango growers and increase the income of women. Women will sell the processed mangos in local shops and local supermarkets, thereby improving their income level at a grass root level, and will also receive loans to begin income businesses out of the revenue generated from the sale of processed mangoes.
